Mr. Berger is an attorney at Barnes, Iaccarino & Shepherd LLP in New York. He focuses on advising Taft-Hartley benefit plans and trustees on a variety of issues including plan administration, compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, contract negotiations with service providers and vendors, benefit claims and appeals, reviewing and revising Summary Plan Descriptions, reporting and disclosure obligations, and withdrawal liability.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Berger worked in-house at an employee benefit fund reviewing Plan Documents and researching compliance issues with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Matthew attended Hofstra University, where he earned a J.D. / M.B.A. with a focus on Finance. During law school, Mr. Berger worked at the Securities and Arbitration Clinic, representing clients in mediation proceedings before FINRA. Mr. Berger also participated in the Business Law Honors Concentration Program and was the recipient of the Arthur Pergament Endowed Scholarship and Citation of Excellence in Bankruptcy Law. He was a member of the Journal of International Business and Law, for which he published a note discussing the merits of the United States Government’s nationalization of AIG during the 2008 recession and its impact on the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, a concentration in Accounting and a minor in Economics.
